What Is the Best Medication for OCD?

Justin La Rose, RP, M.Psy·Focused Exclusively on OCD · 25+ Years in Mental Health · 100s of Clients

The most commonly recommended medications for OCD are certain antidepressants called SSRIs (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors) and, in some cases, clomipramine, a tricyclic antidepressant. Examples of SSRIs often used for OCD include fluoxetine, sertraline, fluvoxamine, paroxetine, and citalopram or escitalopram. Doses for OCD are usually higher than those used for depression, and it can take 8 to 12 weeks or more to see full benefit. "Best" medication varies from person to person, depending on side effects, other health conditions, and past treatment responses. Medication works particularly well when combined with exposure and response prevention (ERP) therapy. A psychiatrist or knowledgeable prescriber can help tailor the choice and dose.
