What Is the 15 Minute Rule for OCD?

Justin La Rose, RP, M.Psy·Focused Exclusively on OCD · 25+ Years in Mental Health · 100s of Clients

The 15 minute rule is a coping strategy sometimes used in OCD treatment to weaken compulsions. When you feel an intense urge to perform a ritual, you commit to waiting 15 minutes before acting on it. During that time, you allow anxiety and discomfort to rise and fall without doing the compulsion, using skills like breathing, grounding, or gentle distraction. Often the urge will decrease enough that you can either skip the ritual completely or do less of it. Repeating this practice teaches your brain that anxiety can fade on its own without rituals. Over time, this builds confidence and reduces the power and frequency of compulsive urges.

If you're experiencing these symptoms, evidence-based treatment can help. We specialize exclusively in OCD using exposure and response prevention (ERP) therapy.
