What Triggers OCD Episodes?

Justin La Rose, RP, M.Psy·Focused Exclusively on OCD · 25+ Years in Mental Health · 100s of Clients

OCD episodes are often triggered by situations, thoughts, or feelings that tap into a person's core fears or values. Common triggers include germs and contamination, responsibility for harm, mistakes at work or school, religious or moral concerns, or relationship worries. Stressful life events, major transitions, lack of sleep, illness, or substance use can lower resilience and make triggers hit harder. Sometimes triggers are very subtle, like a random intrusive thought or an image that "feels wrong." Once triggered, anxiety spikes, obsessions intensify, and the urge to perform compulsions grows. Understanding your personal trigger patterns can help you and your therapist design exposures and coping strategies that gradually reduce their impact.

If you're experiencing these symptoms, evidence-based treatment can help. We specialize exclusively in OCD using exposure and response prevention (ERP) therapy.
