What Age Does OCD Usually Start?

Justin La Rose, RP, M.Psy·Focused Exclusively on OCD · 25+ Years in Mental Health · 100s of Clients

OCD can appear at almost any age, but it most commonly starts in late childhood, adolescence, or early adulthood. Many people first notice symptoms between about 8 and 12, or during the late teens to early 20s. There are also "early-onset" cases that appear in younger children and "adult-onset" cases that begin later in life. Sometimes mild obsessions or rituals show up earlier but are dismissed as quirks until they grow more intense or time-consuming. Because symptoms can creep up gradually, families may only recognize the pattern as OCD in hindsight. Early detection and treatment can prevent habits from becoming deeply entrenched and reduce long-term impact.

If you're experiencing these symptoms, evidence-based treatment can help. We specialize exclusively in OCD using exposure and response prevention (ERP) therapy.
